US May Push Iceland Toward the EU
President Trump may be doing what Brussels could not: making Iceland reconsider the EU.
On August 29, Icelanders will vote on whether to restart EU membership talks. This is not a vote to join. Any final membership agreement would require another referendum. The latest official poll is close: 42% support reopening talks, 39% oppose it and 19% remain undecided.
The old debate focused mainly on fishing rights, national control and the economy. Talks were frozen in 2013 after a dispute with Brussels over fishing. Now Trump’s threats to annex Greenland have forced Icelanders to question whether they can continue relying on Washington.
Both sides should be honest. The EU cannot solve every security concern, but pretending that threats against a nearby Arctic territory have nothing to do with Iceland is irresponsible.
Iceland has every right to remain outside the EU. But assuming Trump will eventually forget about the region is not a serious national strategy.
