A FLAMINGO BECAME ALBANIA’S MOST POWERFUL POLITICAL SYMBOL

Protests that began against a Kushner-linked luxury development near protected coastal wetlands have grown into what BIRN calls Albania’s largest civil mobilisation since the fall of communism.

The flamingo represents the habitat threatened by the project, but the movement now addresses corruption, opaque development, weak public services and a political economy that encourages young Albanians to leave while valuable coastline is offered to wealthy investors.

Prime Minister Edi Rama dismisses the protests as politically motivated. The European Commission has warned that Albania must respect EU environmental requirements as an accession candidate.

“Albania is not for sale” is therefore about much more than birds. It asks who owns the country’s future.
