What the Global Fight Over Greenland Leaves Out: Greenland Is a Society, Not Just Strategic Territory
Most news about Greenland focuses on President Trump, military strategy and mineral wealth. Qaqortoq shows what those stories leave out. In this southern town, the government-owned Great Greenland company runs the country’s only tannery; a factory that preserves and prepares animal skins. Sealskins caught by Inuit hunters are collected through trading stations along the coast, shipped to Qaqortoq, then tanned and coloured. Many steps are automated, but manual handling is still required.
Some skins are sewn locally into jackets, mittens, boots and bags; seal bones are also used for jewellery. Seal meat feeds families and sled dogs, while the skin trade supports thousands of Inuit hunters.
The industry is controversial abroad. In Greenland, it is also food, income and culture. Any debate about the island that ignores the people who depend on this economy is one-sided and fails to tell the full story of Greenland.
